This page shows information about roadways that act as barriers to walking and bicycling. In 2007, the State of Illinois enacted the Complete Streets bill which states that IDOT reconstruction and expansion roadwork in urban areas must now include provision for people who walk or bike. I hope that this law will encourage communities and IDOT to replace trail/roadway grade crossings with grade-separated crossings. Also, road reconstruction projects can be an impetus towards greenway implementation, since the existence of roadway barriers is the 2nd major reason communities hesitate to plan and build greenway trails.
